Japanese renewable energy company Erex has started running its first biomass power plant in Hau Giang province, Vietnam. The plant has a capacity of 20 megawatts and will use about 130,000 tons of rice husks each year to produce electricity. The power generated will be sold through a government program that supports renewable energy, reported Bioenergy Insight.
This is Erex’s first biomass project in Vietnam, and the company plans to build up to 18 more similar plants in the country. Two of these are already under construction in northern Vietnam. Each of the two plants will produce 50 megawatts of power using wood waste as fuel. They are expected to start working by mid-2027.
In addition to power plants, Erex is also planning to build up to 20 factories in Vietnam to make wood pellets, which are used as fuel in biomass power production. These factories will help supply materials for both local use and export.
Erex’s move is part of a larger effort to increase the use of cleaner energy in Vietnam and reduce reliance on traditional sources like coal.
