Nippon Yuka Kogyo, a company within the NYK Group, has launched BioxiGuard, Japan’s first antioxidant developed specifically for marine biodiesel fuels, also known as FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters), reports Chamber of Shipping.
Marine biofuels are more likely to break down over time than traditional petroleum fuels because they contain higher levels of unsaturated fatty acids. This can lead to problems such as sludge buildup, corrosion, and lower fuel efficiency.
To tackle these issues, BioxiGuard is designed to slow the oxidation process in biofuels. Laboratory tests show that adding BioxiGuard at a 1:500 ratio can reduce the rate of fuel degradation by around 50%.
The new product is intended to help maintain the quality of marine biofuels, extend their usability, and improve overall vessel performance. It also supports wider efforts to promote cleaner fuel alternatives in the shipping industry.
