Iowa awards nearly $3 million in grants to expand E15 availability

The state’s cost-share Renewable Fuels Infrastructure Program (RFIP) has awarded nearly $3 million in grants to help fuel retailers add E15 at 111 locations across Iowa. This marks the highest number of projects funded in a single round, keeping the state on track to meet the E15 Access Standard deadline of January 1, 2026, reports Biodiesel Magazine.

In addition to the grants announced on March 25, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has received 145 more applications, which will be reviewed at the next RFIP board meeting.

“The record interest we’ve seen since the new rules were introduced last year shows how important it is to make E15 a standard option at the pump,” said Monte Shaw, Executive Director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA). “With grants awarded so far, we’re looking at over $10 million in funding on an annual basis. This program helps retailers offer more biofuel options, giving consumers a chance to save money while keeping a strong market for farmers. To maintain this momentum, the legislature needs to provide additional funding in the next fiscal year to ensure all Iowa retailers can offer E15.”

Along with the 111 E15 grants, RFIP also awarded two biodiesel grants—one to support a retail location offering B20 and another for a fuel distribution terminal supplying biodiesel blends to retailers. Since its inception, the program has distributed over $57.7 million, leveraging even more private investment to expand ethanol and biodiesel infrastructure across the state. This initiative has driven millions of dollars in economic investment and led to hundreds of new stations offering higher biofuel blends at the pump.
