India’s renewable energy sector achieves significant growth

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has released new data showing significant growth in India’s renewable energy sector between October 2023 and October 2024, highlighting the country’s ongoing commitment to meeting its clean energy targets in line with the ‘Panchamrit’ goals outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India’s total renewable energy capacity surged by 24.2 GW (13.5%) over the past year, reaching 203.18 GW in October 2024, up from 178.98 GW in October 2023. This substantial increase aligns with India’s ambitious renewable energy (RE) targets. When including nuclear energy, the total non-fossil fuel capacity grew to 211.36 GW in 2024, compared to 186.46 GW in 2023.

Solar and Wind Energy Growth

Solar Power: India’s solar capacity saw a remarkable jump of 20.1 GW (27.9%), rising from 72.02 GW in October 2023 to 92.12 GW in October 2024. The combined total capacity of solar projects, including those under development and tendered, now stands at 250.57 GW, up from 166.49 GW last year.

Wind Power: Wind energy capacity grew by 7.8%, increasing from 44.29 GW in October 2023 to 47.72 GW in October 2024. Additionally, the total wind energy capacity in the pipeline reached 72.35 GW.

Capacity Additions

From April to October 2024, India added 12.6 GW of renewable energy capacity, with 1.72 GW installed in October 2024 alone. This reflects an accelerated shift towards renewable energy.

The number of renewable energy projects under implementation and tendered also expanded significantly. As of October 2024, 143.94 GW of projects were under implementation, and 89.69 GW had been tendered. This is a marked increase from October 2023, when 99.08 GW was under implementation and 55.13 GW was tendered, ensuring steady progress toward India’s clean energy goals.

### Hydro and Nuclear Contributions

As of October 2024, large hydro projects contributed 46.93 GW to India’s renewable energy capacity, while nuclear power added 8.18 GW. These contributions strengthen the diversity and resilience of India’s renewable energy mix, supporting the country’s broader strategy for a green energy transition.
