India’s renewable energy capacity achieves historic growth in FY 2024-25

India has made significant strides in its clean energy journey, with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) reporting a record 29.52 GW addition to the country’s renewable energy capacity in the financial year 2024–25. This marks the highest annual increase to date, pushing the total installed renewable capacity to 220.10 GW as of 31st March 2025—up from 198.75 GW the previous year.

The latest figures reaffirm India’s commitment to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030, a key objective under the ‘Panchamrit’ climate goals announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The bulk of the year’s growth came from solar energy, which saw an impressive addition of 23.83 GW—sharply higher than the 15.03 GW added in FY 2023–24. India’s total solar capacity now stands at 105.65 GW. Of this, 81.01 GW comes from ground-mounted projects, 17.02 GW from rooftop installations, 2.87 GW from hybrid solar components, and 4.74 GW from off-grid solar systems. This surge highlights the sector’s continued expansion across both large-scale utility and distributed energy segments.

Wind energy also maintained a positive trajectory, with 4.15 GW of new capacity added during the year, compared to 3.25 GW in the previous fiscal. With this, India’s cumulative wind capacity has reached 50.04 GW, underscoring its role as a vital pillar in the country’s renewable energy mix.

Bioenergy projects, including off-grid and waste-to-energy installations, now contribute 11.58 GW to the national grid. Small Hydro Power (SHP) projects have reached 5.10 GW, with an additional 0.44 GW under construction. These technologies continue to support India’s aim of creating a diversified and decentralized renewable energy landscape.

Beyond installed capacity, India is actively building on this momentum. The renewable energy project pipeline includes 169.40 GW under implementation and 65.06 GW already tendered. Notably, 65.29 GW of this includes advanced solutions such as hybrid systems, round-the-clock (RTC) and peaking power projects, and thermal-renewable bundling initiatives—key to improving grid stability and ensuring continuous power supply from renewables.

Under the leadership of Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, the MNRE continues to introduce critical initiatives aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision for a greener, more energy-secure India.

The record-setting performance in FY 2024–25 stands as a testament to India’s sustained efforts in transitioning to clean energy, further solidifying its position as one of the global frontrunners in renewable energy deployment.
