Ahmedabad: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on September 27 flagged off India’s first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-powered train from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad, as part of a series of railway projects launched in the Sabarmati Division, ANI reported.
Speaking at the event, Shah said the initiatives were aimed at addressing environmental concerns while improving passenger convenience, safety and connectivity.
He said projects inaugurated or launched in the Sabarmati Division involved an investment of Rs 1,472 crore and would benefit passengers in the region. Shah also highlighted the transformation of Sabarmati Railway Station and its facilities.
On railway electrification and efforts to reduce diesel consumption, Shah said Indian Railways’ diesel consumption had declined from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25. He said the government aimed to bring diesel consumption down to zero by 2030.
Shah said railway electrification had increased significantly, from 75 km in 2010-11 to 7,188 km in 2023-24. He added that 99.6% of the railway network had been electrified.
During his address, Shah also criticised the Congress, alleging that the previous government was involved in scams and corruption. He contrasted this with the record of the Narendra Modi government, ANI stated.
