Indian Government launches skill training programs in green energy and electric vehicles

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Shell India have launched a new Green Skills and Electric Vehicles (EV) training program designed to equip students and faculty with the necessary skills for the future of green energy and e-mobility.

According to a statement from the Ministry, the program will be rolled out by Edunet Foundation, Shell’s training partner, across select Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, starting June 12, 2025.

Under the collaboration between the Directorate General of Training (DGT) and Shell India, the training will follow a structured multi-tier approach and will be offered at a range of ITIs and NSTIs.

In its initial phase, the program will feature a 240-hour advanced EV Technician course at four NSTIs, a 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course at 12 ITIs with Shell-supported labs, and a 50-hour foundational green skills module at other ITIs that don’t have physical labs.

The curriculum has been jointly developed by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and DGT, covering critical areas such as EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, digital tools, and safety protocols. The initiative also includes a Training of Trainers (ToT) program for over 250 instructors, providing certification co-branded by Shell and DGT, as well as structured placement support to improve industry readiness.

One of the program’s key features is the establishment of specialized EV skill labs at select ITIs and NSTIs, designed to offer hands-on training and expert-led sessions that meet industry standards.

In addition to lab-based training, the program will provide placement support and co-branded certifications to successful participants, boosting their employability in the green energy and EV sectors.

The Government of India has been actively promoting Green Energy and Electric Vehicle adoption as part of its net-zero goals. Programs like the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme have been instrumental in accelerating EV adoption, improving infrastructure, and providing targeted incentives. In parallel, states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have introduced their own EV policies to drive the transition to electric mobility, build local ecosystems, and create green jobs.

These developments reflect the growing need for a skilled workforce in the green energy and EV sectors.

As the leading national body for vocational training, DGT will play a pivotal role in mobilizing students and trainers, ensuring the initiative aligns with national standards for education and skill development.
