India installs 8,885 EV public charging stations under FAME-II scheme

India has installed 8,885 public charging stations for electric vehicles under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-II) Scheme as of July 1, 2025, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply, reports Energetica India.

Quoting figures from the Ministry of Power, Varma said there are now 29,277 public charging stations across the country.

The FAME-II Scheme, which ran from April 2019 to March 2024, offered incentives for buying electric two-, three-, and four-wheelers, provided grants for electric buses, and funded charging infrastructure. Government data shows the scheme helped add 14,35,065 electric two-wheelers, 1,65,029 three-wheelers, and 22,644 four-wheelers. Of 6,862 electric buses sanctioned, 5,165 are already in service.

“The scheme gave a big push to EVs in India by supporting buyers and building the charging network,” Varma said.

The programme also promoted local manufacturing of electric vehicles and their components, making only those made in line with domestic manufacturing rules eligible for incentives.

Varma added that the government is encouraging private investment in battery production and EV supply chains through two incentive programmes — the INR 25,938 crore PLI-Auto scheme to promote advanced vehicle technology, and the INR 18,100 crore PLI-ACC scheme to create 50 GWh of advanced battery capacity.

“To prepare for the growing number of EVs on the road, we have set aside INR 2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme to install more charging stations across the country,” the minister said.
