India emphasises faithfulness to Paris Agreement Architecture and dialogue-based approach to enhancing climate ambition

During the Pre-CoP30 Meetings in Brasilia on October 13, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, addressed the Global Stock Take (GST) breakout session, acknowledging the successful completion of the first GST. He emphasized that this milestone affirmed the genuine implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The GST is a five-year process designed to assess the collective progress of nations toward achieving the Paris Agreement’s goals. Yadav outlined that the GST serves three key functions: enabling countries to evaluate progress, identify gaps, and guide enhanced actions both domestically and globally.

The Minister described the GST as a central mechanism driving the Agreement, stimulating political momentum and sustaining efforts for greater ambition. He noted that focusing on these areas during the Dialogue would promote international cooperation and encourage domestic climate action, guided by the outcomes of the GST.

Looking ahead, the Minister suggested that future GSTs should avoid rushing to include scientific assessments without proper discussion on their global relevance. Science, he emphasized, must be rigorous, accurate, and robust, drawing from all relevant sources.

Yadav also highlighted the urgent need to implement ambitious climate measures and address the critical shortage of resources available to developing countries for adaptation and mitigation efforts. He underscored that the time for continuous reviews without tangible action had passed, stating, “Dialogue is important, but action is imperative.”
