New Delhi: India has added 2,361 MW of biomass-based power capacity, 228 MW of waste-to-energy capacity and installed about 2.88 lakh biogas plants across the country over the last ten years, the government informed Parliament on Wednesday, reports The Statesman.
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik said the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is promoting bioenergy projects under the National Bioenergy Programme (NBP), Phase I. The programme was notified on November 2, 2022, with an allocation of ₹998 crore and will be implemented during the period from 2022-23 to 2025-26, he said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
The minister said the government has supported bioenergy development over the past decade through several schemes. These include the National Biogas and Manure Management Programme during the 12th Five Year Plan, the New National Biogas and Organic Manure Programme between 2018-19 and 2020-21, and schemes to promote grid-connected biomass power and bagasse-based power generation in sugar mills.
Support was also extended through programmes focused on energy generation from urban, industrial and agricultural waste during the 12th Plan period, as well as schemes aimed at promoting biomass-based power generation in sugar mills and other industries between 2018-19 and 2020-21, he added.
