The Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Ethanol Association (GEA) to advance the use of ethanol as a sustainable green fuel, with a strong emphasis on the marine sector, while also covering applications in automobiles and civil aviation.
The agreement was signed by Sanjay Ganjoo, Director General of IFGE, and Morten Jacobsen, Secretary General of GEA, underscoring a major step toward deeper international collaboration in bioenergy and green fuels. The partnership aims to support low-carbon solutions, particularly for maritime transportation.
Under the MoU, the two organizations will work together to accelerate the adoption of ethanol as a viable marine fuel, contributing to global shipping decarbonization. The collaboration will focus on innovation, policy advocacy, and market development, while also promoting ethanol-based solutions in road transport and aviation to reduce carbon emissions and support the broader green energy transition. As part of the agreement, GEA will share its global expertise on ethanol, including research publications, technical studies, and international best practices. Both sides will also undertake joint promotional and advocacy initiatives to highlight ethanol’s potential as a clean, scalable, and commercially viable fuel.
Commenting on the development, Atul Mulay, Chairman of the IFGE BioEnergy Committee and President of Praj Industries, said the partnership is a significant step toward building international market linkages for ethanol, particularly in emerging segments such as marine fuels. He added that the collaboration would create new opportunities and open global markets for IFGE members and Indian companies across the ethanol value chain.
GEA Secretary General Morten Jacobsen described the MoU as a pivotal moment in advancing global decarbonization efforts. He said GEA is pleased to support India’s growing green energy sector and help IFGE and its members tap emerging global markets for Indian-produced sustainable fuels such as ethanol.
According to Jacobsen, the partnership will strengthen international cooperation and speed up the shift toward cleaner energy solutions in maritime transport, civil aviation, and road mobility worldwide. He also noted that GEA’s founding members share this vision and are committed to positioning ethanol as a key element of a sustainable, low-carbon future for global transportation.
As part of the collaboration, IFGE will actively engage with GEA to explore opportunities and assess the feasibility of developing markets for ethanol-based green energy solutions in India and abroad. The two organizations will jointly conduct knowledge-sharing activities, including workshops, seminars, and stakeholder consultations, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, ship owners, ports, fuel suppliers, and other stakeholders to strengthen the ethanol-based marine fuel ecosystem.
