Hapag-Lloyd signs multi-year deal with Shell for supply of liquefied biomethane

Shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has entered into a multi-year agreement with Shell Western LNG B.V. (Shell) for the supply of liquefied biomethane, also known as Bio-LNG. The deal, effective immediately, strengthens the companies’ strategic collaboration launched in 2023 to advance the use of alternative marine fuels, reports Bioenergy Insight.

Bio-LNG forms a key part of Hapag-Lloyd’s plan to achieve net-zero fleet operations by 2045. By incorporating waste-based renewable fuels into its operations, the company aims to reduce vessel emissions and support its customers in lowering supply chain carbon footprints.

Shell has been offering liquefied biomethane as part of its LNG bunkering services since 2024, now available at 22 global locations.

Jan Christensen, Senior Director Global Fuel Purchasing at Hapag-Lloyd, said the agreement provides the fuel certainty and supply reliability needed to expand the use of renewable fuels across the fleet. “Collaborations like this demonstrate that true leadership in shipping means acting now – using lower-emission fuels already available today and not waiting for future solutions,” he added.

Dexter Belmar, Vice President Global Downstream LNG at Shell, noted: “Bio-LNG is no longer a concept – it’s here, and it’s fuelling the next chapter of shipping decarbonisation. These long-term deals help build the confidence needed to scale renewable fuels.”

The Bio-LNG supplied under the agreement is ISCC EU-certified, ensuring sustainable feedstock sourcing, full supply chain traceability, and independently verified emissions reductions.
