Germany supports Kazakhstan’s green hydrogen ambitions

Astana: Kazakhstan and Germany took a significant step toward energy transformation with the launch of the German Training Week – Green Hydrogen on April 22 in Astana. This strategic initiative aims to position Kazakhstan as a future hub for green hydrogen production, drawing on its vast renewable energy potential and industrial capacity, reported Hydrogen Central.

Organized under the Project Development Program for Green Hydrogen Projects by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the training week is part of the German Energy Solutions Initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

Over 25 key stakeholders from Kazakhstan’s chemical and fertilizer industries, industrial associations, finance sectors, and regulatory bodies participated to deepen their understanding of green hydrogen technologies and explore emerging market opportunities.

Bakytzhan Ilyas, Vice Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan, underscored the critical importance of green hydrogen in the country’s energy transition.

“Kazakhstan regards green hydrogen as a strategic element of decarbonization and for the diversification of sustainable development of the economy,” he stated.

He emphasized that, amidst global climate challenges, green hydrogen development is both timely and strategically vital for Kazakhstan’s sustainable future.

German Ambassador to Kazakhstan Monika Iwersen highlighted green hydrogen as a key enabler of climate neutrality across industries.

“It offers the unique opportunity to store and transport renewable energy and to use it in a wide range of sectors: from industry to transportation to heat supply,” she noted.

She emphasized that Kazakhstan’s abundant solar and wind resources make it an ideal candidate to become a major green hydrogen producer, contributing not only to domestic decarbonization but also to global energy transition goals.

Manuel Andresh, Head of the Hydrogen Diplomacy Office in Astana, reinforced Germany’s commitment to supporting Kazakhstan’s green hydrogen journey.

“With the German Training Week – Green Hydrogen, we aim to support Kazakh enterprises to benefit from the expertise of German solution providers,” he said.

The event serves as a platform for technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and business matchmaking, encouraging bilateral cooperation in scaling green hydrogen technologies.

With its strategic location, growing renewable capacity, and evolving regulatory environment, Kazakhstan is well-positioned to become a regional green hydrogen powerhouse. Pilot projects, infrastructure investment, and strategic partnerships—like this one with Germany—could accelerate its emergence on the global green hydrogen map.
