German energy group commences green hydrogen production in Lingen

German energy company RWE AG has launched a 14-MW electrolysis facility in Lingen, Lower Saxony, marking the beginning of its plan to establish 300 MW of green hydrogen capacity at the site by 2027, reported Renewables Now.

This pilot plant, powered by renewable energy, is situated at RWE’s Emsland gas-fired power plant and can produce up to 270 kg of green hydrogen per hour.

As per media report, the facility incorporates two types of electrolysis technologies: a 10-MW alkaline electrolyser from Sunfire and a 4-MW PEM electrolyser from ITM Power. The use of these diverse technologies aims to provide valuable data for scaling up hydrogen production in the future.

Initially, the hydrogen produced will be blended with the fuel used in the Unit D gas turbine of the power plant as part of a detailed testing program. RWE plans to incorporate up to 5% hydrogen into the gas to evaluate its impact on electricity generation.

From mid-2025, hydrogen from the pilot plant will also be available for refueling hydrogen-powered vehicles at the Emsland site. Construction is already underway for a hydrogen filling station and a trailer filling facility at the location.

The pilot plant is just the first phase of developing the Lingen site into a major hydrogen hub. By 2025, a 100-MW electrolyser will be operational under the GET H2 Nukleus project, with plans to increase capacity to 300 MW by 2027. Over EUR 490 million (USD 534.93 million) has been allocated by the federal government and Lower Saxony for the 300-MW electrolyser project.

Lower Saxony’s Minister President, Stephan Weil, stated, “Lower Saxony is at the forefront of investments in this technology within Germany. The state is set to contribute 50 percent of Germany’s green hydrogen production, as recently approved by the EU. Lower Saxony will become a central hub for the production, import, storage, transportation, and utilization of hydrogen.”
