GCAA launches first digital platform for CORSIA implementation to reduce aviation emissions

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the UAE has launched the region’s first digital platform designed to implement the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). This innovative platform is a key step in streamlining the calculation of carbon offset values and reduction measures for national carriers, supporting the UAE’s commitment to global aviation emissions reduction.

CORSIA, a global initiative endorsed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in 2016, was officially implemented in 2019. Its primary goal is to minimize emissions from international aviation by requiring airlines to offset unavoidable CO2 emissions, those that cannot be mitigated through technological upgrades, operational improvements, or the use of sustainable aviation fuels.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, highlighted the UAE’s long-standing dedication to sustainable aviation practices, stating, “The UAE is fully committed to meeting global requirements aimed at reducing the environmental impact of international aviation emissions. Since ICAO’s initial climate change resolution for aviation in 2010, the UAE has actively supported ICAO’s efforts, collaborating with member states to meet targets for reducing aviation emissions.”

Al Suwaidi also referenced the recent introduction of the “Dubai Framework for Aviation Fuel” in November 2023, which includes an ambitious goal of reducing international aviation emissions by 5% by 2030. CORSIA serves as the sole globally recognized system for implementing fuel standards and future fuel developments within the aviation industry.

The newly launched digital platform represents a significant shift from the manual data submission process that national carriers had used for the past four years. Previously, carriers submitted emissions data to GCAA representatives manually, which was time-consuming and prone to errors. The automated platform simplifies the process, ensuring greater data confidentiality and accuracy, while also reducing review times and minimizing human error.

In addition to its core functions, the platform serves as an archival system, maintaining a comprehensive digital record of international emissions data. This valuable resource will support future applications and innovations related to carbon offsetting and reducing emissions within the aviation sector.

With this technological advancement, the GCAA is furthering its commitment to sustainable aviation and enhancing the UAE’s role in global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of air travel.
