Gasum acquires full ownership of two biogas firms in Sweden

Nordic energy company Gasum has acquired full ownership of two biogas companies in southern Sweden, reinforcing its strategy to grow within the renewable energy sector, reported Bioenergy Insight.

The company has finalized the purchase of the remaining shares in NSR Biogas and Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis, completing its takeover of both firms. Gasum had already held a majority stake in Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis since 2023 but now controls both companies entirely.

NSR Biogas operates a biogas production facility in Helsingborg, a key site in Sweden’s Skåne region. Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis manages the upgrading of raw biogas from the plant, which is then marketed and distributed by Gasum.

The facility processes around 160,000 tonnes of household and industrial waste annually, including manure, and has a production capacity of up to 80 GWh of upgraded biogas per year.

“Since we already had majority ownership of the upgrading operations, it was a logical next step to assume full control of the entire production chain in Helsingborg,” said Mika Wiljanen, CEO of Gasum. “This acquisition not only strengthens our presence in the competitive Skåne region but also enables us to optimise plant operations and fully utilise its production potential.”

Gasum is continuing to invest heavily in expanding biogas production across Sweden. Its first large-scale biogas plant began operations in early 2025, and a second facility is under construction, expected to open in 2026.

The company aims to supply 7 terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable gas annually to the Nordic market by 2027, reflecting its growing commitment to clean energy solutions.
