Finnair has launched a new service under its Finnair for Business program that enables corporate customers to support the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and reduce emissions from business travel, reports ARGS (Airline Routes & Ground Services).
The service allows companies to track the emissions from their flights and contribute to the purchase of SAF through a co-funding model. The emission reductions are verified by a third party, and customers receive an audited SAF certificate that can be used in sustainability reporting.
The reductions are allocated using a book-and-claim model, which means companies can claim the benefits of SAF even if the fuel is not physically used on their own flights.
Tuomo Karppinen, Finnair’s Head of Environment, said the initiative is part of a broader effort to make flying more sustainable. “Real progress requires cooperation across the system – from policymakers and energy producers to airlines and customers. With this new service, we want to speed up the adoption of alternative aviation fuels made from renewable materials.”
In 2024, about 0.5% of Finnair’s fuel purchases were SAF. This year, the airline aims to nearly triple that share. Finnair is working with partners such as Neste to expand the use of renewable fuels.
Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, produced from materials including used cooking oil and animal fat waste, can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its life cycle compared to fossil jet fuel.
Karppinen noted that while aviation fuel will not become fully renewable in the near future, increasing the use of SAF can deliver meaningful emission reductions.
Finnair has committed to expanding its use of SAF as part of its wider sustainability goals and the transition toward lower-emission air travel.
