Eskilstuna Biogas AB plans to start construction of 70 GWh LBG plant in Sweden

Eskilstuna Biogas AB (EBAB) is set to begin the construction of a 70 GWh liquefied biogas (LBG) plant outside Eskilstuna, Sweden, in collaboration with several key partners. These include local Eskilstuna farmers, Eskilstuna Energi & Miljö (EEM), Klimatklivet, Gotlandsbolaget, the UK-based infrastructure fund Equitix New Generation, and Andion CH4 Renewables.

Once completed, the plant will become one of the largest of its kind in the Nordic region, providing renewable LBG to local municipal services and Destination Gotland. The plant is anticipated to begin production in the second quarter of 2026.

With a processing capacity of up to 150,000 tons of agricultural and food waste per year, the facility will produce up to 5,400 tons of liquefied biogas annually. The feedstock for the plant will be sourced from local farmers, many of whom are also co-owners of the project, and from Eskilstuna Energi & Miljö.

Long-term supply contracts have secured offtake volumes with the local municipality EEM and Destination Gotland, a subsidiary of Gotlandsbolaget. The plant will also feature a public LBG filling station. Additionally, the plant will produce digestate, which will be sold as a high-quality biofertilizer to the participating farmers.

The project commenced with site preparations in August 2024, and the goal is to start gas production in the second quarter of 2026.

“We are very excited to finally start the construction of the Eskilstuna biogas plant with a distinguished group of strategic investors and valuable municipality and local farming partners,” said Kaj WÃ¥gdahl, chairman of Eskilstuna Biogas AB. “We are also looking forward to contributing to a 10% CO2 reduction in the region and leading the way for other necessary green initiatives in the years to come.”
