ENGIE acquires two biomethane production units in the Netherlands

ENGIE is further expanding its biomethane production capacity in Europe by acquiring two new units in the Netherlands, marking the Group’s inaugural biomethane production facilities in the country.

Situated in Hardenberg, Overijssel, and Alkmaar, North Holland, these new plants boast annual biomethane production capacities of 90 GWh and 47 GWh, respectively. Both facilities have the potential for expansion, enabling the Hardenberg unit to achieve an annual production capacity of 150 GWh and the Alkmaar unit to reach 94 GWh.

ENGIE is a leading biomethane producer in France, with an annual production capacity of 0.7 TWh. These latest acquisitions, following previous ones like Ixora Energy Ltd and Rainbarrow Farm in the UK, reinforce ENGIE’s footprint in Europe, increasing its installed production capacity to 1.1 TWh. These developments align with ENGIE’s goal, announced on February 21, 2023, of achieving 10 TWh of biomethane production per year in Europe by 2030.

Cécile Prévieu, Executive Vice President overseeing ENGIE’s Infrastructure activities, commented, “With the acquisition of these two facilities in the Netherlands, we have expanded into a third country for biomethane production in Europe. We are committed to consistent investment in this renewable, local, and secure energy source. Renewable gases are pivotal to the energy transition and will play a significant role in decarbonizing the European economy.”
