Emerging green hydrogen sector in Oman offers numerous employment and localization opportunities

The emerging green hydrogen sector in Oman offers numerous employment and localization opportunities across its supporting sub-sectors, according to Eng. Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of Hydrom, reported Zawya.

As per the media report, at the launch of the Green Hydrogen Ecosystem Readiness Laboratory earlier this week, Al Aufi noted that achieving the country’s target of producing 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030 will require approximately 40 million solar panels powered by 35 GW of renewable energy. “Today, the Omani market for renewable energy has become significant, capable of supporting many industries. The numbers I mentioned are not just for effect but to signal to the private sector the scale of our needs. The local market is promising and has the potential to absorb these industries,” Al Aufi said.

He stressed the importance of broadening the focus beyond just manufacturing solar panels to developing a comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem. “We need to consider not only the solar panels but also the frames, bases, cables, installation components, and connectors required. Our site visits revealed that there are many related components that can be produced domestically,” he added.

Additionally, Al Aufi emphasized the need for future-oriented planning.
