Electric vehicles set to drive India’s growth, says Jitendra Singh

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh, on Sunday said electric vehicles are becoming a major force in India’s growth, helping protect the environment, create jobs and encourage entrepreneurship among young people, reports DD News.

The minister made the remarks during his visit to the Electric Vehicle Expo at Bharat Mandapam, where he met exhibitors and reviewed electric mobility solutions and domestically made EV products displayed by Indian companies.

Singh said Indian manufacturers have made rapid progress in developing electric vehicles, components and clean mobility technologies. He described the EV sector as an important part of India’s shift towards a cleaner and more sustainable future, adding that domestic companies are now showing strong confidence and technical capability that matches international standards.

Speaking to the media, the minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently highlighted the importance of environmental protection and electric mobility, while spreading awareness about clean energy options. He said India is not only adopting new technologies from around the world but is also contributing to the global move towards sustainable transport.

Referring to recent steps taken in the clean energy sector, Singh said government initiatives such as the SHANTI Bill, 2025, which encourages private participation in nuclear energy, show a broad approach to strengthening clean and dependable energy sources. He added that electric mobility fits well into this vision by supporting development while protecting the environment.

The minister said electric vehicles are easier to drive and require less physical effort than conventional vehicles. He pointed to their growing use in areas such as ambulances, e-rickshaws, passenger vehicles and commercial transport, highlighting their increasing presence across different segments.

Singh said electric mobility is also opening up new opportunities for jobs and business, especially for young people. He noted that government support has helped many young entrepreneurs start EV-related businesses with limited investment and grow them into successful ventures with access to technical and financial assistance.

Calling for wider awareness, the minister urged efforts to inform young people about opportunities in the EV sector. He said electric mobility offers a strong platform for innovation, self-reliance and long-term, sustainable growth.
