Electric vehicles cross 115,000 mark in Ethiopia, says transport minister

Ethiopia now has more than 115,000 electric vehicles in operation nationwide, including electric motorcycles and public transport buses, highlighting the country’s growing move towards cleaner and more sustainable transport, according to State Minister of Transport and Logistics Berio Hassan, reports Dawan Africa.

Speaking to local media, the minister said Addis Ababa is currently running more than 110 electric public transport buses, each capable of carrying about 90 passengers. He said the buses are fully part of the city’s daily transport system, following a government decision to allow private sector participation in urban public transport.

Berio Hassan said the government plans to raise the number of electric public buses to 500 within the next four years. He added that electric transport services will also be extended to several regional cities outside the capital as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s transport network and ensure fair access to services across Ethiopia.
