easyJet partners for long-term sustainable aviation fuel supply

Taking a step toward reducing carbon emissions, easyJet has signed an agreement with Braathens Renavia and Mana Group to secure a long-term supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The deal, outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to provide the airline with up to 150,000 tons of SAF, including up to 75,000 tons of e-SAF, starting in 2030. This fuel will support easyJet’s operations across Europe and the UK, reports TRAVELWIRES.

The SAF will be made using the gasification of biomass and solid waste, along with hydrogen created from renewable energy sources. This production method is expected to cut carbon emissions by more than 90% compared to traditional jet fuel. It also promotes a circular economy by using waste and renewable materials to create cleaner fuel options.

World Fuel Services, a global fuel supplier, will manage the logistics, blending, storage, and regulatory requirements for the SAF. This ensures an efficient and reliable process that complies with sustainability standards in the UK and the EU.

Raminder Shergill, easyJet’s Director of Tax & Fuel Strategy, said the airline is committed to helping expand the SAF industry. “We are pleased to invest in e-SAF, which can cut emissions by up to 90%, supporting our decarbonization plans,” Shergill said.

According to G. Braathen, founder of Braathens Renavia, the partnership is important for scaling up the availability of SAF. “We are proud to work with easyJet and World Fuel to scale up the use of sustainable aviation fuel,” he added.

Duncan Storey, senior vice president at World Fuel Services, highlighted his company’s role in making SAF accessible to the aviation sector. “Our focus is on ensuring SAF reaches sustainability-minded customers while meeting regulatory needs,” he said.

This agreement is a step towards reducing the environmental impact of air travel. The partnership sets the stage for a cleaner future in the airline industry by boosting the production and use of sustainable aviation fuel.
