Charwood Energy, a French company known for its customised biomass energy systems, has announced two major projects worth more than €2.4 million. These contracts, developed in partnership with Idex—a key player in France’s push for low-carbon energy—focus on building modern biomass heating systems for a local community and an industrial site, reports Bioenergy Insight.
The first project will bring a new heating system to the town of Val d’Isère in the Savoie region, a mountain area that is currently being considered as a venue for the 2030 Winter Olympics. Charwood Energy is designing and constructing a compact heating setup that runs on wood pellets. The system will feature three boilers with a combined heating capacity of 750 kilowatts. It will also include a prefabricated storage silo made of two stacked concrete units that will hold the wood pellets, as well as a hot water buffer tank, piping, and electrical control systems. All prefabrication work is being carried out at the Saint-Nolff facility, operated by Charwood Energy’s engineering division, Energy&+. The contract, signed in the second quarter of 2024 for €450,000, is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2025. Most of the cost will be billed within 2024.
The second project involves installing a clean heating system at a poultry processing plant in Plouray, located in the Brittany region. This system will help reduce the factory’s reliance on fossil fuels by replacing its existing steam-based heating with a more sustainable hot water circuit powered by wood chips. The heating setup includes an 850-kilowatt biomass boiler, a 900-kilowatt gas backup unit, and three large buffer tanks to store hot water. To reduce air pollution, the system will also include an electrofilter to capture fine particles. Additional work involves civil engineering, installation of a biomass transport system, and replacement of old steam piping. The system is being prefabricated at Charwood’s Saint-Nolff site to minimise disruption at the factory. The contract for this project, valued at €2 million, was signed in early 2025, with billing spread across 2025 and 2026.
Eric Fossard, Deputy CEO of Charwood Energy, said these projects reflect the company’s ability to provide reliable and tailored heating solutions across different sectors. He emphasised that working with Idex is helping accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels by delivering systems that are both practical and sustainable. Christian de Bellescize, Head of the Industry Market at Idex, added that Charwood Energy’s expertise is essential for helping clients meet their environmental goals while maintaining economic efficiency.
