Cepsa commences supplying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Canary Island

Cepsa has begun supplying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Canary Islands. The energy company has made SAF available at the North Tenerife and Gran Canaria airports, with plans to expand this offering to the other main airports in the archipelago in the coming weeks.

These airports in the Canary Islands join five major Spanish airports where Cepsa already supplies sustainable fuel: Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga, and Seville.

Álvaro Macarro, Cepsa’s director of sustainable aviation, stated, “We’re making strides toward decarbonizing the aviation sector while fulfilling our commitment to providing the Canary Islands with energy that generates low CO2 emissions. We take pride in contributing to the sustainability of the region’s aviation and tourism industries.”

Cepsa is a leading producer and supplier of aviation fuels in Spain. At its La Rábida Energy Park near Huelva, the company produces this sustainable fuel from used cooking oils to promote a circular economy.

To ensure a steady supply of SAF, Cepsa has also started building the largest second-generation biofuels plant in southern Europe in partnership with Bio-Oils, backed by a €1.2 billion investment. This facility, set to begin operations in 2026 in Palos de la Frontera near Huelva, will have the capacity to produce 500,000 metric tons of SAF and renewable diesel annually. With this initiative, Cepsa aims to become the leading producer of second-generation biofuels in Spain and Portugal, targeting an annual production capacity of 2.5 million metric tons of biofuels, including 800,000 metric tons of SAF—enough to allow flights around the world 2,000 times.
