Biomass gasification necessary for green hydrogen: Dr Sheth

Nagpur: On National Science Day, Dr. Pratik N. Sheth, a professor from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, spoke at the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) in Nagpur. During his keynote address at the NEERI Auditorium, Dr. Sheth explained different ways to produce hydrogen, including grey, blue, turquoise, and green hydrogen, with a special focus on sustainable energy solutions, reported The Times of India.

In his talk titled ‘Green Hydrogen from Agro-Residue: A Path to Sustainable Energy,’ Dr. Sheth encouraged young people to develop a scientific mindset and think like entrepreneurs. He said that science and innovation are essential for global leadership and mentioned the Ministry of Education’s new Cell of Innovation, which includes both the Institute Innovation Council and the School Innovation Council.

Dr. Sheth focused on hydrogen produced from biomass, known as green hydrogen. He explained how hydrogen can be made from plant and agricultural waste using thermochemical processes. He shared his successful experiments in creating bio-oil from jatropha residue cake and discussed how changing the temperature in the reactor affects the amount of bio-oil produced. He also highlighted the importance of converting biomass into gas to support India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Waste to Energy programs.

Additionally, he talked about other methods of producing hydrogen, such as converting solid and industrial waste into syngas through Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) gasification. Dr. Sheth said that producing green hydrogen from agricultural waste could be a sustainable energy solution for the future.
