In a move towards adopting green energy, the Assam cabinet has approved an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Industries to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The Cabinet has endorsed a MoU between Reliance Bio-Energy Limited and the Government of Assam aimed at promoting the compressed biogas sector in the state. According to this agreement, an integrated network of compressed biogas infrastructure will be developed, which will help decrease pollution caused by fossil fuels while ensuring food security and providing significant employment and income opportunities for farmers by creating a biovalue chain ecosystem.
To enhance rural development through improved connectivity and irrigation, the cabinet has also authorized the construction of 97 rural roads and 70 minor irrigation projects across the state. These initiatives will enhance connectivity in 23 districts and benefit farmers in 28 districts of Assam, with a total investment of ₹428.62 crore under NABARD’s RIDF-XXX scheme.
The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the importance of thorough discussions regarding the project’s feasibility. “We will explore how practical and achievable this transition will be in Assam,” Sarma stated, noting that the Cabinet is eager to investigate every possible option for making this shift.
Reliance Industries has already expressed interest in establishing a biorefinery in the state. During the Assam Tribune Dialogue on September 14, Chief Minister Sarma confirmed this development, stating, “I received a letter from Reliance Industries indicating their intention to set up six biorefineries across the country, with Assam selected as one of the locations.”
