Biogas industry set new records in 2024, adding 125 projects and $3 billion in investment

The American Biogas Council (ABC) has reported another record-breaking year for the biogas industry in 2024. Over the past year, 125 new biogas projects became operational across the United States, bringing in more than $3 billion in investments. This marks a 17% increase in new projects compared to 2023, with total investment growing by 40% from the previous year, reports Biomass Magazine.

Biogas facilities convert organic waste—such as manure, wastewater, food waste, and landfill gas—into renewable natural gas (RNG), electricity, heat, and fertiliser. In 2024, these operations produced more than 10% additional biogas compared to any previous year.

The industry’s growth has brought the total number of biogas facilities in the U.S. to nearly 2,500. Collectively, these facilities generate about 1.4 million standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of biogas, a continuous source of renewable energy. This output is equivalent to the energy produced by 15,000 football fields of solar panels, enough to power 2.4 million homes annually or replace the fuel consumption of 2.6 million gasoline-powered cars. Biogas projects also play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere and using it to replace fossil fuels.

“The biogas industry keeps growing every year because it’s an energy solution that works on multiple levels,” said ABC Executive Director Patrick Serfass. “It provides clean electricity, reduces pollution from transportation, and supports industries that need heat-producing fuel. At the same time, it helps manage millions of tons of waste from farms and cities. With energy demand rising, fertiliser supplies under pressure due to global conflicts, and America working toward energy independence, the value of biogas is clearer than ever.”

Landfill gas (LFG) projects remain the largest contributors to the country’s biogas output, producing 72% of all biogas in the U.S., even though they make up a smaller share of facilities compared to wastewater and agricultural projects. In 2024, 24 new LFG projects were launched, increasing the total number of such facilities to 580—a 4.3% rise. These projects attracted $1.4 billion in investments, accounting for 47% of the total capital spent on biogas developments last year. The expansion boosted LFG sector output by more than 12%, bringing it to around 980,000 scfm.

Although more landfill projects are now upgrading biogas into renewable natural gas, 77% of them still generate electricity. The steady increase in LFG projects highlights their role in advancing renewable energy production while reducing landfill emissions.
