Biodiesel production plants in Japan uses “PURAMEM®” membrane

Polyplastics-Evonik Corporation (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) has announced the successful adoption of its solvent-resistant separation membrane, PURAMEM®, at a biodiesel production plant, with mass production now underway.

In 2023, in collaboration with partner company RITA Corporation (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo), PURAMEM® was integrated into the biodiesel refining process at Daiseki Eco. Solution Co., Ltd., a leading domestic biodiesel manufacturer. During both the piloting and commissioning stages, the membrane demonstrated a substantial increase in productivity compared to traditional distillation systems. Even during mass production, it has maintained superior performance, achieving an annual refining capacity of 1,200 kL, which is approximately 17 times more efficient than conventional distillation methods.

The introduction of PURAMEM® has proven highly effective in removing impurities from biodiesel, ensuring the production of high-quality fuel (FAME – fatty acid methyl ester). Unlike distillation, the membrane-based process avoids the need for high heat treatment, eliminating the risk of thermal decomposition while increasing yield. This process is not only more energy-efficient but also offers a safer and cost-effective alternative.

Biodiesel, made through transesterification of vegetable oils, animal fats, or used cooking oils (UCO), serves as a renewable and biodegradable substitute for traditional diesel fuel. As a result, it reduces CO2 emissions and supports carbon neutrality goals, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With UCO gaining attention as an alternative feedstock in Japan, where biomass resources are limited, its use in biodiesel production is becoming increasingly popular, offering a solution that has no impact on food supplies.

Membrane separation, known for its high energy efficiency and productivity, stands as the most advanced method for biodiesel refining. Polyplastics-Evonik is committed to partnering with industry leaders to further develop sustainable solutions and provide ongoing technical support to customers, reinforcing the company’s contribution to building a more sustainable future.
