Following months of opposition, a new biochar processing plant in Upper Lake, California has finally received the permit to operate. Scotts Valley Energy Corporation and Habematolel Pomo Tribal Nation jointly ventured into this multi-million-dollar plant that will change forest woodchips into syngas that will be consumed by electricity generators.
The Lake County Planning Commission approved the project on December 12, with four commissioners voting in favour and one absent.
According to Laura Hall, senior planner for Lake County, the property for the plant will be leased to Scotts Valley Energy Corporation for a period of 15 years. The lease agreement is with the Department of Water Resources Flood District, as reported by the Lake County Record-Bee.
