Australia aims production of 15 million tonnes of green hydrogen

Australia aims to produce 15 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually—potentially up to 30 million tonnes—by 2050, according to the updated National Hydrogen Strategy 2024, reported Gasworld.

The strategy outlines a phased approach: initiating industry activation and initial production from 2020 to 2030; scaling up production and exports of hydrogen and its derivatives from 2030 to 2040; and further expanding exports and domestic use, including applications in aviation, from 2040 to 2050. By 2030, the target is to produce between 0.5 and 1.5 million tonnes of hydrogen.

To support this, the Australian Government will introduce substantial production incentives through the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive and the Hydrogen Headstart programmes.

The $2 per kilogram Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive will offer temporary, demand-driven support to eligible producers of renewable hydrogen via the tax system, serving as the main government backing for the sector until 2040.

The Hydrogen Headstart programme is an early intervention designed to bridge the financial gap between production costs and sale prices of renewable hydrogen, targeting early industry participants with well-established projects.
