AgVault unveils precision fermentation tech to boost ethanol plant profits and diversify product streams

With most efficiency improvements in ethanol production already realized, AgVault has introduced a next-generation fermentation technology aimed at significantly boosting profitability for existing ethanol facilities. By leveraging low-cost carbohydrate sources already present in ethanol plants, the technology enables the creation of high-value products such as premium yeasts and yeast-derived components, thereby enhancing and broadening the production of animal and pet feed.

AgVault’s advanced precision fermentation system is specifically designed to be installed alongside and integrated within ethanol production plants. The system consists of three main components: preparation of carbohydrate feedstock, precision fermentation, and downstream product processing. This innovative approach stands out due to its high production efficiency and rapid kinetics, which streamline operations, reduce costs, and deliver strong returns on capital investment. “A co-located AgVault facility with a 16,000-ton annual capacity achieves a 35% return on investment, selling its superior yeast product at 90% of the cost of conventional yeast,” said Kevin Dretzka, AgVault’s co-founder and President.

Precision fermentation involves using microorganisms such as yeast and bacteria to produce microbial proteins. AgVault’s approach sets itself apart from traditional protein manufacturing by offering a more sustainable and efficient alternative. “Precision fermentation is transforming how we produce protein, providing environmentally responsible and efficient options,” stated Russ Zeeck, co-founder and COO. He added that consumer awareness and demand for sustainable products are key drivers of global market growth, with untapped sectors offering vast potential in areas like food, nutraceuticals, enzymes, fertilizers, and soil microbiomes.

AgVault’s patented fermentation technology allows ethanol plants to diversify their output and generate greater value by moving beyond traditional ethanol production into areas such as feed, food, cosmetics, bioplastics, and textiles.

The core microorganism used in AgVault’s system is yeast — a staple in ethanol production — making it easier to integrate the technology into existing operations. The system not only improves ethanol fermentation but also produces a high-quality, affordable product suitable for feed and food applications. Key benefits include:

  • Over 50% microbial protein content with enhanced digestibility
  • Pure yeast protein, not a by-product with inconsistent quality or non-yeast additives
  • Improved amino acid bioavailability and higher levels of essential amino acids
  • Enhanced complex carbohydrate and Beta-glucan content
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions in dairy cattle

AgVault’s fermentation platform offers ethanol producers a compelling opportunity to diversify revenue streams, increase profit margins, and enhance business value — all without depending on government incentives or subsidies — by tapping into the fast-growing precision fermentation market.
