Adani Power Limited (APL) on Thursday announced it has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from MP Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) for supplying 1,600 MW of electricity. The allotment includes an initial 800 MW awarded through a competitive tender and an additional 800 MW under the ‘greenshoe option’.
This marks APL’s fifth major power supply order in the past year, bringing its total awarded capacity to 7,200 MW. The additional allocation has been secured at the same tariff as the initial award — ₹5.838 per kWh.
Electricity will be supplied from a new 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal power plant to be developed in Anuppur district, Madhya Pradesh. The project will follow the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model, with both units expected to be commissioned within 60 months from the appointed date. Adani Power plans to invest approximately ₹21,000 crore in the plant and associated infrastructure.
According to the company, this is the first time a greenshoe option has been used in a thermal power tender in India — a move that industry watchers see as a significant development in coal-based power procurement. The mechanism is expected to bolster electricity supply in Madhya Pradesh, where demand is surging due to rapid urbanisation and industrialisation.
“We are delighted that Adani Power has not only secured the initial 800 MW project in Madhya Pradesh but has also been awarded an additional 800 MW under the greenshoe option,” said S.B. Khyalia, CEO of Adani Power. “This reinforces our commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable power to the state and its people. The project further strengthens our long-term partnership with Madhya Pradesh and highlights our dedication to supporting India’s energy security and economic growth.”
Coal linkage for the new project has been allocated under the Government of India’s SHAKTI policy. During construction, the project is expected to create 9,000 to 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, and around 2,000 jobs once operational. A Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with the state distribution utility will be signed in due course.
Adani Power has been steadily expanding its national footprint. In September 2024, along with Adani Green Energy, it secured a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a 6,600 MW composite order from Maharashtra, comprising 5,000 MW solar and 1,600 MW thermal. This was followed by a 1,600 MW LoA from Uttar Pradesh in May 2025 and a 2,400 MW award from Bihar in August 2025. The initial 800 MW awarded by Madhya Pradesh last month has now doubled with the invocation of the greenshoe clause.
The company is currently executing the largest private sector capital expenditure programme in India’s power sector to meet rising base load demand. Adani Power operates 18.15 GW across 12 thermal power stations and targets a total generation capacity of 41.87 GW by FY 2031-32.
