Adani Power receives LoA for 2,400 MW greenfield thermal power plant in Bihar

Adani Power has been awarded a Letter of Award (LoA) for a long-term, 25-year electricity procurement agreement with Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd. (BSPGCL). The power will be supplied from a new 2,400 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant to be built in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur district, Bihar.

According to a press release, the LoA was granted by BSPGCL on behalf of the North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (NBPDCL) and the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (SBPDCL). A Power Supply Agreement (PSA) between the parties is expected to follow shortly to formalize the deal.

Adani Power CEO S.B. Khyalia emphasized the strategic significance of the Bihar project. “As India’s largest private thermal power producer, Adani Power has consistently delivered reliable, large-scale capacity. Our upcoming high-efficiency, ultra-supercritical project in Pirpainti will set new standards in performance and sustainability. It will ensure affordable, uninterrupted electricity for Bihar, boosting industrial growth, strengthening the state’s economy, and supporting its people’s development,” he said.

India’s electricity demand continues to grow steadily. Forecasts suggest peak demand could rise from the current 250 GW to nearly 400 GW by 2031–32 and exceed 700 GW by 2047. In response, the Indian government plans to add about 100 GW of new thermal power capacity by 2035 to maintain a stable and reliable energy supply.

The Pirpainti power plant will consist of three units of 800 MW each. Adani Power secured the project through a tariff-based competitive bidding process conducted by BSPGCL, having submitted the lowest bid at ₹6.075 per unit. The company plans to invest around USD 3 billion in constructing the plant and associated infrastructure.

During construction, the project is expected to create 10,000 to 12,000 direct and indirect jobs. Once operational, it will sustain approximately 3,000 permanent jobs.
