Japan’s Karatsu biomass power plant delayed again, now set for September 2025

Japanese renewable energy company Renova Inc (TYO:9519) has announced that the commercial launch of its 49.9-MW Karatsu Biomass Power Plant has been postponed for a second time, now scheduled for September 2025, reports Renewables Now.

Originally set to begin operations in December 2024, the plant was first delayed to March 2025. Renova cited the same reason for the latest postponement—additional time is needed for boiler and turbine adjustments to ensure stable, long-term operation.

The plant’s feed-in tariff (FIT) sales period is expected to run until November 30, 2044. Renova also stated that the project owner is entitled to liquidated damages under the EPC contract for a certain period.

Once operational, the Karatsu plant will generate around 350 million kWh of electricity annually, using wood pellets and palm kernel shells (PKS) as fuel. This output will be enough to supply power to approximately 110,000 households.

Renova emphasized that the delay will not impact its revenue, EBITDA, or operating profit for the current fiscal year.
