The United States exported 19,303.6 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends (B30 or greater) in December, according to data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service on February 5th. This marks an increase from the 16,879.6 metric tons exported in November, but a decrease from the 55,131.8 metric tons exported in December 2023, reports Biodiesel magazine.
The amount of biodiesel exported in December showed an increase compared to November’s total of 16,879.6 metric tons but was significantly lower than the 55,131.8 metric tons exported in December 2023. Canada was the top destination for U.S. biodiesel exports during the month, receiving 13,298.2 metric tons. Peru followed with 5,904.4 metric tons, while Germany imported 100 metric tons. The value of these exports reached $19.58 million in December, which was an increase from the $17.35 million recorded in November but a sharp decline from the $94.79 million reported in December 2023.
For the full year of 2024, total U.S. biodiesel exports amounted to 585,324.4 metric tons, valued at $798.2 million. This represented a decline from the 869,478.8 metric tons exported in 2023, which had a total value of $1.53 billion. Canada remained the largest buyer of U.S. biodiesel for the year, importing 515,956 metric tons. Peru ranked second with 64,870.6 metric tons, while Germany followed with 2,239.9 metric tons.
Biodiesel imports into the U.S. increased in December, reaching 97,420.7 metric tons, up from 76,519.5 metric tons in November. However, this figure was lower than the 158,044.1 metric tons imported in December 2023. Germany was the top supplier of biodiesel to the U.S. in December, providing 60,778.4 metric tons. Canada was the second-largest source, exporting 28,074.4 metric tons, while Italy supplied 8,482.3 metric tons.
The value of biodiesel imports in December was $119.13 million, which was higher than the $91.44 million recorded in November but lower than the $234.1 million reported in December 2023. The total U.S. biodiesel imports for the year 2024 were 1.4 million metric tons valued at $1.88 billion. This is lower than the 1.69 million metric tons imported in 2023, with a total value of $2.79 billion.
