Combined biogas and biomethane production in 2023 amounted to 22 bcm, according to the 14th edition of the Statistical Report published recently by the European Biogas Association. This is more than the entire inland natural gas demand of Belgium, Denmark, and Ireland combined, and represents 7% of the natural gas consumption of the European Union in 2023.
The EBA highlighted the environmental and energy benefits of biogas and biomethane production. Current production levels have the potential to cut 106 million tons of CO2 emissions annually, supply renewable energy to 19 million European households, and power over 500,000 LNG trucks each year.
These renewable energy sources are seen as vital for reducing Europe’s reliance on imported natural gas, which accounted for 98% of the EU’s demand in 2022. Investing in biogas and biomethane can help secure energy independence while supporting climate goals.
“Biogases are not just a renewable energy source; they are flexible, can be stored for future use, and support the development of other renewable energy solutions,” said EBA CEO Harmen Dekker.
In 2023, biomethane production reached 4.9 bcm, with installed capacity increasing to 6.4 bcm annually by early 2024. This marked the largest growth for the sector, with EU production rising by 21% compared to the previous year.
Biomethane was primarily used in transportation (23%), buildings (17%), power generation (15%), and industry (13%)—all high-energy-consuming sectors where decarbonization is critical.
The production of biogas and biomethane also generates biogenic CO2 as a byproduct, which could be used in sustainable industries such as making eco-friendly fuels and chemical products or storing carbon. In 2023, Europe produced 29 million tons of biogenic CO2, meeting 71% of the EU’s CO2 demand from the previous year.
The EBA projected that with sufficient investment and support, the sector could create 500,000 jobs and add €12 billion to the European economy annually by 2030. An estimated €25 billion will be invested in biomethane infrastructure by that time.
However, the association stressed the importance of better market conditions, streamlined regulatory processes, and faster approvals to maintain growth and achieve Europe’s energy and environmental goals.
Biogas and biomethane are proving to be essential tools in Europe’s push for renewable energy, offering environmental benefits, energy security, and economic growth.
