Volvo Group teams up with Japanese company for use of sustainable aviation fuel

Kintetsu World Express Inc. (KWE), headquartered in Japan, and the Volvo Group have teamed up to utilize sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), as per KWE’s announcement on March 7.

“Kintetsu World Express is privileged to be a pivotal part of Volvo Group’s journey towards a more sustainable future, serving as its inaugural partner in transitioning to SAF for air-cargo shipments,” KWE expressed.

“This SAF collaboration highlights our mutual commitment to further reducing carbon emissions in the air-freight transportation sector,” the company emphasized.

Under the partnership, the Volvo Group will procure the environmental benefits (CO2 emission reductions) from SAF via Kintetsu World Express for all its contracted air-freight shipments throughout the year.

This initiative will aid the Volvo Group in striving towards climate neutrality across its value chain by 2040.

The agreement is poised to significantly boost the adoption of SAF within the air-cargo industry.

“As a global logistics provider, we’ve been exploring ways to share SAF’s environmental benefits with our clientele,” noted Yoshikazu Yashiki, Managing Officer at KWE.

“We are delighted and honored to collaborate with Volvo Group, renowned as one of the world’s most sustainable companies,” Yashiki expressed. “We eagerly anticipate the participation of other partners in our SAF initiative.”

Christina Bentzler Möller, Senior Vice President of Service-Market Logistics at Volvo Group, remarked, “This strategic alliance aligns with our vision to decarbonize Volvo’s air-freight supply chain. By utilizing sustainable aviation fuel, we are not only meeting industry benchmarks but actively contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future, in line with our sustainability strategy.”

Unlike conventional aviation fuels, SAF is derived from renewable sources like agricultural residues or waste oils, significantly reducing its carbon footprint compared to traditional jet fuels, thereby supporting the quest for more sustainable air transportation.
