Government confident of meeting 20 per cent ethanol blending well before target time

As ethanol blending continues to rise, the government is confident it will meet its target of 20% ethanol blending well ahead of schedule.

While speaking at an event, India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, said, “We are going to achieve the ethanol blending target well before target time. We have saved ₹91,000 crore on fossil fuel imports due to the ethanol blending programme. Today, we are in happy situation of having crossed 15.9 per cent ethanol blending last month.”

The government has advanced its 20% ethanol blending target in petrol from 2030 to the ethanol supply year (ESY) 2025-26.

The government is actively pushing the Ethanol Blended with Petrol (EBP) Programme, which enables Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to sell petrol mixed with ethanol. India’s ethanol production capacity is expanding rapidly, currently reaching 1,648 crore litres, which is expected to further boost national output.

These government efforts have led to consistent growth in ethanol production capacity, with many states now having more ethanol capacity than needed. According to the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), the EBP is making steady progress. States like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Sikkim, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh have exceeded their ethanol production capacities, promoting energy self-sufficiency and supporting farmers. These states are also assisting smaller states with their ethanol supply needs.
