UK waste wood industry prevents 701,000 tonnes of carbon emissions in 2023, new data shows

The significant role of the UK waste wood industry in reducing carbon emissions was highlighted today with the release of new independently verified data from the Wood Recyclers’ Association (WRA), reported Bioenergy Insight.

As per the news report, the data indicates that waste wood biomass, which accounts for about two-thirds of the UK’s waste wood market, prevented nearly 701,000 tonnes of carbon emissions in 2023 by displacing conventional energy generation. Additionally, if carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) were implemented in these facilities, potential carbon savings could reach 3.6 million tonnes in the future, which would represent 16% of the government’s goal to capture 23MtCO2 per year by 2035.

These figures were derived from a model reviewed by the certification body Kiwa and were based on the WRA’s latest waste wood statistics from 2023.

In another area of the waste wood industry, recent data show that the panel board sector sequestered over 1.1 million tonnes of carbon in its particle board products in 2023 through the use of waste wood.

This carbon data is the result of two years of effort by the WRA’s Net Zero working group, which focused on measuring the carbon benefits of the waste wood sector, alongside its contributions to the circular economy.

Richard Jenkins, a board member of the WRA and chair of the working group, expressed his satisfaction with the release of these figures, emphasizing the essential role the sector plays in both the circular economy and achieving net zero goals.
