Bengaluru: Electric vehicles continued to gain ground in Bengaluru, with the city accounting for more than half of Karnataka’s EV registrations in August 2026, according to transport department data, The Times of India reported.
The city registered 76,508 new vehicles during the month, including 13,389 EVs. Electric vehicles therefore accounted for 17.5% of all new vehicle registrations in Bengaluru, or roughly one in every six vehicles.
On average, nearly 2,500 new vehicles were added to Bengaluru’s roads every day in August, including around 430 EVs.
Electric two-wheelers dominated the city’s EV registrations, with 9,453 units registered during the month. Electric cars accounted for another 1,258 registrations. The figures translate into an average of around 300 electric two-wheelers and 40 electric cars being registered every day.
Electric two-wheelers accounted for about 71% of Bengaluru’s EV registrations during August, while electric cars contributed around 9%. The remaining registrations were across other vehicle categories.
Across Karnataka, 26,636 EVs were registered in August, with Bengaluru accounting for 13,389 units, or 50.3% of the state total.
The city also continued to account for a substantial share of Karnataka’s overall EV fleet. As of August 30, Bengaluru had more than 4.9 lakh registered EVs, compared with nearly 8.9 lakh across Karnataka, giving the city a share of around 56%.
Bengaluru’s EV fleet included around 3.8 lakh electric two-wheelers and 46,596 electric cars. Its electric commercial fleet comprised 9,922 motor cabs, 6,855 passenger three-wheelers and 9,876 goods three-wheelers. The city also had 2,009 registered electric buses.
Despite the growth in EV registrations, electric vehicles still account for a relatively small share of Bengaluru’s overall vehicle fleet. The city had around 1.3 crore registered vehicles as of August 30, including more than 88.5 lakh two-wheelers and nearly 25.5 lakh cars. EVs accounted for about 3.8% of the total registered vehicle fleet.
Karnataka’s overall EV fleet stood at nearly 8.9 lakh, comprising around 7.3 lakh electric two-wheelers and 65,915 electric cars, besides vehicles in commercial and other categories.
The state’s annual registration data also shows the rapid expansion of electric mobility. Karnataka recorded 7,155 EV registrations in 2019-20, rising to 46,140 in 2021-22 and crossing one lakh in 2022-23. Registrations reached around 2.3 lakh in 2025-26, more than 32 times the level recorded in 2019-20.
