NDMC offers 50% parking discount for EVs, restricts fuel vehicle use in central Delhi

The New Delhi Municipal Council has announced a set of steps to promote green mobility and conserve energy across Lutyens’ Delhi, including a 50 percent rebate on parking charges for electric vehicles.

The decisions were taken during a meeting chaired by NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal at Palika Kendra. The measures are aimed at reducing fuel consumption and encouraging environmentally friendly practices, especially in light of global energy concerns linked to the West Asia situation, Realty Plus reported.

Starting Monday, electric vehicle owners will receive a 50 percent discount on parking fees at all NDMC-managed facilities. In addition, the council will launch dedicated shuttle bus services for employees from key residential areas such as Sarojini Nagar, Laxmibai Nagar, Jor Bagh, and Chanakyapuri.

Officials said buses will reach pickup points by 9 am and depart for Palika Kendra at 9.30 am, with return services scheduled in the evening. The shuttle network is also set to expand, covering more residential areas with additional buses to improve connectivity and reduce reliance on private vehicles.

In a major policy shift, the council has decided not to purchase any new petrol, diesel, or CNG vehicles for the next one year. Officials and department heads have been directed to use metro services or public transport every Monday, while employees are being encouraged to adopt carpooling.

For official work, shared vehicles will be used for field visits to cut down fuel consumption. The NDMC is also working with the Delhi Traffic Police and Delhi Police to improve last-mile connectivity through e-rickshaws and electric autos.

The council is further promoting cycling as part of its sustainability plan. It currently operates 51 e-bike stations with around 500 bicycles, which will now be used more actively.

To reduce unnecessary travel, online meetings and video conferencing will be prioritised, and official foreign travel has been temporarily suspended. Employees have also been advised to avoid non-essential international trips.

The education department will introduce online classes after the summer break and run awareness campaigns on sustainable living and environmental responsibility.

Under revised work arrangements, up to 33 percent of employees in certain departments may be allowed to work from home, with rotational duty schedules to ensure services continue without disruption.

NDMC officials said they will also engage with resident welfare associations and traders to spread awareness about responsible energy use and sustainable lifestyles across the capital.
