Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reduced the size of his official convoy during recent domestic visits as part of a broader effort to promote austerity and conserve fuel, according to official sources, PTI reported
The scaled-down convoy was seen during his visits to Gujarat and Assam, shortly after his address in Hyderabad where he urged citizens to adopt measures to cut fuel consumption and reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
Sources said the changes have been implemented without affecting security arrangements mandated under Special Protection Group (SPG) protocols. Officials maintained that all essential security measures remain fully in place despite the reduced number of vehicles.
In another step linked to the initiative, the Prime Minister has directed officials to include electric vehicles in his convoy wherever possible. The move is expected to be carried out using existing resources, without any fresh procurement of vehicles.
Officials said the decision is in line with the government’s broader push to promote electric mobility and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.
Modi has consistently highlighted the need for sustainable practices and lower fuel use, especially in the context of global economic uncertainty and rising geopolitical tensions.
