Austrian energy company breaks ground on nation’s largest green hydrogen project

Energy company OMV has begun construction on what will become Austria’s largest green hydrogen facility. The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027, reports Upstream.

The new plant will have a capacity of 140 megawatts. It will use power from wind, solar, and hydroelectric sources to produce up to 23,000 tonnes of hydrogen each year.

This clean hydrogen will be used at OMV’s Schwechat refinery. There, it will replace hydrogen made from natural gas, which has a larger environmental footprint.

OMV already runs the country’s current largest green hydrogen project, a smaller 10-megawatt facility that started operations in April of this year. The new project represents a major expansion of the company’s investment in clean fuel production.
