Tata Motors electric vehicle sales jump 44% in August

Tata Motors reported a significant rise in electric vehicle (EV) sales for August 2025, marking a 44% year-on-year increase. The company sold 8,540 EV units during the month, up from 5,935 in August 2024, underscoring its growing footprint in the electric mobility space.

In a company statement, Tata Motors noted: “Recorded highest-ever monthly sales with rising consumer confidence in EVs and accelerating the shift towards green, zero-emission mobility.”

However, the performance of the passenger vehicle (PV) segment presented a mixed trend. Domestic PV sales—including EVs—fell by 7% to 41,001 units compared to 44,142 units in the same month last year. On the other hand, international PV business saw a dramatic increase, with sales surging 573% to 2,314 units from 344 units a year ago. Total PV sales (including exports and EVs) reached 43,315 units, a marginal 3% dip from 44,486 units in August 2024.

In contrast, the commercial vehicle (CV) division posted robust growth. Total CV sales rose by 10% to 29,863 units, up from 27,207 units in August last year. Domestic CV sales grew by 6% to 27,481 units, while the international CV segment saw a 77% spike, reaching 2,382 units from 1,343 units a year earlier.

Breaking it down further, heavy commercial vehicles (HCV) recorded a 5% increase with 7,451 units sold. Intermediate and light commercial vehicles (ILMCV) rose 15% to 5,711 units, passenger carriers climbed 5% to 3,577 units, and small commercial vehicles (SCV) including cargo and pickups grew 4% to 10,742 units.

Overall domestic sales across all categories stood at 68,482 units in August 2025, reflecting a slight 2% decline from 70,006 units during the same month last year. While the dip in domestic passenger vehicle sales weighed on total volumes, the company’s strong performance in EVs and commercial vehicles contributed to a relatively balanced overall outcome.
