The Government of India is advancing its commitment to affordable and eco-friendly public transportation through several key initiatives, including the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-India) Scheme. Launched to boost electric mobility, the scheme provides demand incentives for electric vehicles (EVs). The first phase of FAME-India began on April 1, 2015, initially set for two years. Following its successful implementation, the second phase, FAME-II, was introduced in 2019 with a significant outlay of Rs.11,500 crore. This phase targets incentives for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, electric buses, and the development of EV public charging stations (PCS).
As of October 31, 2024, the FAME-India scheme has allocated a total of Rs.8,844 crore, including Rs.6,577 crore for vehicle subsidies, Rs.2,244 crore for capital assets, and Rs.23 crore for other expenses. The program has incentivized the purchase of 16.15 lakh electric vehicles, comprising 14.27 lakh electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws), 1.59 lakh electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws), 22,548 electric four-wheelers (e-4Ws), and 5,131 electric buses. Additionally, 10,985 EV public charging stations (PCS) have been sanctioned, with 8,812 earmarked for installation.
The FAME-II scheme is also tied to a phased manufacturing program and has played a pivotal role in supporting critical policy initiatives. These include reducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on electric vehicles and enabling state-level EV policies, further accelerating India’s transition toward sustainable and electric mobility.
