West Bengal to expand public transport with 350 CNG buses; 25 electric buses under consideration

The West Bengal Transport Department is set to acquire approximately 350 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses as part of its initiative to expand the state’s public transport fleet. A senior official confirmed that this move is intended to cut down carbon emissions and diversify fuel sources for the state’s bus services, reported ET Infra.

Additionally, a proposal for the procurement of 25 electric buses is currently under review, according to reports by PTI.

No Plans to Phase Out Electric Buses, Says Official

Despite reports suggesting a possible phase-out of electric buses due to issues such as high maintenance costs, shorter battery life, and difficulties in sourcing spare parts, the official clarified that there are no such plans.

“There is no such plan,” the official stated. “While we are in the process of procuring 350 CNG buses, the proposal for 25 electric buses is also being reviewed by the relevant authorities. We are committed to giving equal priority to both options.”

At present, 80 electric buses are operational across various depots in the northern and southern regions of the state. Each electric bus is equipped with three batteries, each costing ₹18 lakh, and can travel between 100 to 110 kilometres on a full charge. If a battery malfunctions, however, the bus cannot continue its operation.

Unlike electric buses, the newly planned CNG-powered air-conditioned buses will avoid battery-related issues, though the official emphasized the importance of expanding CNG refuelling infrastructure to accommodate the new fleet.

“We aim to maintain a balance between both CNG and electric buses,” the official added.
