We strongly support India’s drive towards renewables, says Australian High Commissioner

Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, reiterated his country’s strong support for India’s renewable energy ambitions during his address at the India Energy Storage Week (IESW) on Wednesday.

“We strongly support India’s drive towards renewables. India is very important to the world,” Green stated, underlining the significance of India’s transition to clean energy on the global stage.

Highlighting Australia’s active engagement, Green noted that over 22 Australian companies and around 40 representatives were participating in the event, with involvement from nearly all Australian states. “We are here in strength,” he said, reflecting the depth of Australia’s commitment.

He also spoke about the natural synergy between the two countries, particularly in green energy and technology. “We are very strong in minerals and metals essential for battery storage,” Green said. “We also bring skills and capabilities to the table. Our universities and technical colleges are keen to support the upskilling of India’s workforce for the new green energy revolution.”

Emphasising Australia’s innovation capabilities, Green pointed out that while Australia is rich in green technology advancements, its relatively small population limits domestic scaling. “Australia is a hub of innovation, but we are far from major supply chains. India, with its large population, provides the scale and opportunity to globalise Australian innovation. That’s why our presence at India Energy Storage Week is so significant.”

He also spoke of the long-term vision behind the partnership, stressing the importance of scaling Australian solutions within India’s growing green energy market.

Last week, in an interview with ANI, Green addressed the strategic importance of establishing a streamlined supply chain for critical minerals—particularly lithium—between Australia and India. He underscored Australia’s role as a leading producer of such minerals and its commitment, as a Quad member, to ensuring reliable and high-quality mineral supplies to India to support its energy transition.
