Vinh Long explores Japan partnership in agro-exports, biomass power

Vinh Long: The People’s Committee of Vinh Long province on September 12 held talks with Japan’s WAGO Group and Hai Phong Investment, Trade and Construction Co., Ltd. to explore cooperation in agricultural exports, technology transfer in crop cultivation, and biomass power development, reports Vietnam Plus.

Provincial Chairman Luu Quang Ngoi highlighted Vinh Long’s strategic position in the Mekong Delta, with strong advantages in agricultural production, agro-processing, and logistics. He said the province is pursuing three priorities:

deep processing of key farm and aquatic products to boost added value and reduce post-harvest losses,

developing international-standard traceability and quality systems for high-end markets, and

strengthening links between farmers, enterprises, scientists, and distributors.

Ngoi affirmed the administration’s commitment to providing a transparent, stable, and competitive investment climate.

WAGO Group Chairman Kiuchi Hirokazu noted that Vinh Long, one of the Mekong Delta’s largest rice-growing provinces, produces a large volume of rice husks annually. Instead of being discarded, husks could serve as biomass feedstock.

The group proposed building a biomass power plant in the province, using rice husks to generate turbine steam and processing the remaining ash into silica — a raw material for construction and solar panel manufacturing. Hirokazu stressed the dual benefits of reducing agricultural waste while creating new industrial inputs.

WAGO also expressed interest in investing in agro-processing facilities to expand exports of Vinh Long’s mango, orange, sweet potato, and aquaculture products to Japan. However, Hirokazu underscored the need to comply with Japan’s strict food safety and phytosanitary standards.

According to Tran Quoc Tuan, Director of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, Vinh Long produces about 380,000 tonnes of rice husks annually, while the Mekong Delta as a whole generates 5 million tonnes — providing a solid foundation for biomass investment.

Deputy Agriculture and Environment Director Le Van Dung added that Vinh Long cultivates 330,000 hectares of rice each year, yielding 1.9 million tonnes of unhusked grain, of which 80% is high-quality. The province also has over 101,000 hectares of fruit trees producing 2.25 million tonnes annually, nearly 120,000 hectares of coconut (over half of Vietnam’s total), and 110,000 hectares of aquaculture yielding 620,000 tonnes of seafood such as shrimp, crabs, and tra fish.

Japan is a key export market for the province. Vinh Long’s exports to Japan reached USD 621.9 million in 2024. In the first eight months of 2025, exports totaled USD 457.6 million, led by protective nets, wire harnesses, coconut-based goods, seafood, fresh fruit, and apparel.
