VINCI wins contract for green hydrogen steel plant in Germany

Cobra IS, a subsidiary of VINCI, has been chosen by SMS Group GmbH to undertake piping and mechanical works for a section of Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe’s steel production plant in Duisburg, Germany.

According to the press release, the contract is valued at 74 million euros.

With an annual capacity to produce 2.5 million tonnes of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), this facility is the first of its kind in Germany designed to operate solely on green hydrogen.

This initiative represents a significant move towards transitioning from high-carbon industries to environmentally friendly technologies. It is expected to reduce emissions by up to 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually.
